Iran attacked Israel with drones and missiles in response to the Israeli army’s strike on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus, in which Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps generals were killed.
Arab governments have called for an easing of tensions between Tel Aviv and Tehran following Iran’s massive incursion into Israeli territory. The Hill wrote this on Sunday, April 14.
In particular, the Saudi Foreign Ministry called for “the highest level of self-restraint” in a statement, and the government of the United Arab Emirates warned of increasing “stability” in the region.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry called on the leaders of Israel and Iran to “exercise maximum restraint and avoid provocations that could increase tension and instability in the region.” He noted that the conflict between Israel and Iran “has started to become dangerous because it coincides with the crisis in the Gaza Strip and increases tension in other hot spots in the region.”
The Jordanian government supported Israel. The statement noted that the move was made to prevent Iran from “threatening the security of our citizens, as well as homes and populated areas.” It was noted that US President Joe Biden on Sunday discussed the conflict with King Abdullah II of Jordan, who condemned the attack.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the Middle East is on the brink of a devastating full-scale conflict and called for “maximum self-restraint” and de-escalation following Iran’s attack on Israel.
Let’s remember that on the night of April 14, Iran fired more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel, 99% of which were intercepted by air defense forces. Israel has opened its airspace after the Iranian attack.
However, Tehran called its attack “successful” and warned Israel not to retaliate.
