Russia continued its massive shelling of the country’s critical infrastructure. This time, the strikes were not conducted during the coldest time of the year, as previously expected.
Russia has two reasons to attack Ukrainian energy infrastructure in the spring. CNN writes about this on Sunday, April 14, citing Ukrainian experts.
In particular, the director of the Kyiv Energy Industry Research Center (EIRC) Alexander Kharchenko believes that the aggressor country needs to accumulate weapons and collect the necessary intelligence data for these attacks.
“This strategy has obviously been in the works for a long time, they’ve spent a lot of time developing it, they’ve obviously been gathering intelligence and preparing carefully for these attacks,” he told reporters.
Elena Pavlenko, president of the energy think tank DiXi Group, suggested that Moscow expects the power plants to be less protected by air defense systems. According to him, the enemy expects Ukraine to move part of its air defense from energy facilities closer to the front line in the spring.
“It’s not a mistake, it’s just prioritization. We thought that if the winter is over, maybe in another place we can use the air defense system,” she said.
Let’s recall that on the night of April 11, Russia attacked energy infrastructure facilities in four regions of Ukraine – Kharkov, Zaporozhye, Lviv and Kyiv regions. In particular, the troops of the aggressor country completely destroyed the Trypilska Thermal Power Plant in the Kiev region.
