Guterres believes that regional and global peace and security are increasingly fragile with time.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the Middle East is on the brink of a devastating full-scale conflict and called for “maximum deterrence” and de-escalation following Iran’s attack on Israel. CNN writes this on Sunday, April 14.
“The population of the region is facing a real risk of a devastating full-scale conflict. It is time to withdraw from the brink. It is important to avoid any actions that could lead to serious military clashes on several fronts in the Middle East,” Guterres called.
He also noted that the UN and member states have a “shared responsibility” and called for the involvement of “all stakeholders to prevent further escalation.”
The Secretary General also called for a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, noting that neither the region nor the world can afford more wars.
Let’s remember that on the night of April 14, Iran fired more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel, 99% of which were intercepted by air defense forces. Israel has opened its airspace after the Iranian attack.
However, Tehran called its attack “successful” and warned Israel not to retaliate.
