The first debate is scheduled to take place on September 16 at the University of Texas, the second on October 1 at the University of Virginia and the third on October 9 at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City.
American media outlets ABC News, CBS News, CNN, NBC Universal News Group and FOX News Media, as well as The Associated Press, C-SPAN, NewsNation, Noticias Univision (Univision Network News), NPR, PBS NewsHour and USA TODAY wrote an open letter asking presidential candidates to publicly participate in televised debates before the general election. ABC News reported this on Sunday, April 14.
“With the contours of the 2024 general election now firmly in place, we – the subscribing national news organizations – are calling on the likely presidential candidates to publicly commit to participating in the general election debates before the elections in November,” the media said in an open letter to the candidates.
The media called this appeal an “unusual step” and explained it by the fact that the traditional American practice of election debates “met with uncertainty” on the part of Biden and Trump.
ABC News recalled that Trump missed all four primary debates in 2024 and bowed out in one of the three debates to Biden in 2020. At the same time, he enthusiastically called on Biden to participate in the three general debates scheduled for this autumn.
“President Trump has been very clear: He is ready anytime, anywhere, anywhere. We are once again calling on Joe Biden to commit to the debate,” said his spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt.
The Biden campaign, in turn, has expressed concern that the nonpartisan group that has organized these events since the 1980s is unsure of its ability to organize a “fair” debate with Trump.
The media companies’ letter said: “General election debates have a rich tradition in American democracy, playing an important role in every presidential election for the last 50 years. In each of those elections this, tens of millions of people watched the candidates debate the competition of ideas for the votes of the American people.”
Therefore, according to the American media, the debate between the presidential candidates “cannot be replaced by anything.”
