Trump repeatedly promised to quickly end the Russian war in Ukraine after winning the presidential election.
Donald Trump, while serving as US President, has made it clear that he believes Ukraine should be part of Russia. Such a strong statement was made by former Trump adviser Fiona Hill in a new book by The New York Times reporter David Sanger, excerpts from which were cited by The Guardian.
What book is that?
Sanger released a book called The New Cold Wars: The Rise of China, the Russian Invasion, and America’s Struggle to Defend the West. The book will be released in the US on Tuesday, and The Guardian has obtained a copy.
Fiona Hill was senior director for European and Russian affairs at the US National Security Council from 2017-2019. “Trump has made it clear that he believes Ukraine, and of course Crimea, should be part of Russia,” Hill said in the book.
“He really cannot accept the idea that Ukraine is an independent state,” he added.
Sanger concluded that Trump’s view of Ukraine is “essentially identical” to that of Vladimir Putin, who ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 after Trump left office.
Hill was a key witness in Trump’s first impeachment trial over his attempts to blackmail Ukraine. He is the co-author of Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin, a best-selling biography.

Maryana Budzherin of Harvard University’s Kennedy School recalled that Trump said he would end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours.
“It is important that for Trump’s electoral base, Ukraine is a very distant country. They look more at the range of their problems; For them, the problems in Alabama, or bad schools, or unemployment are more important , so they can direct the money to Ukraine instead. For the Europeans, this war is closer. I heard from my own sources in Washington that Trump has some kind of irrational hatred for Ukraine. Plus yet, the fact that the subject of Ukraine is involved in his first impeachment also plays a big role,” said Budzherin.
Plans have fun
Trump may consider creating a two-tier NATO depending on defense spending by Alliance member countries, as well as forcing Russia and Ukraine to negotiate a cease-fire, CNN reports.
According to the channel’s sources, the structure considered by Trump means that countries that do not meet the requirement to allocate 2% of their GDP to defense could fall into the second tier of membership. This means that they will not have the guarantee of protection under Article 5 of NATO, which guarantees that the resources of the entire Alliance can be used to defend any individual member country if it is attacked.
The authors of the material suggest that Trump is likely to use US military aid to Ukraine as leverage to force both sides to the negotiating table.
“If Ukraine wants continued aid, it should come to the negotiating table, and if Russia doesn’t want us to give huge amounts of new support to Ukraine, they should come to the negotiating table. This doesn’t mean we should give up on Ukraine or give Putin everything he wants,” the channel’s source said.
According to CNN, a person familiar with Trump’s thinking said that if Trump wins the presidential election, he will likely meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky the day after of his election or inauguration to begin organizing negotiations.
