The Secretary General of NATO approved the provision of long-range weapons to Kyiv, but each country decides on this issue independently.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg believes Ukraine has the right to strike legitimate military targets outside the country as part of self-defense. The Alliance Secretary General said this on Wednesday, April 10, at a joint press conference with Finnish President Alexander Stubb in Brussels.
Stoltenberg noted that NATO allies independently decide how to help Ukraine. However, he emphasized that he approved of providing the state with long-range weapons.
The Secretary General emphasized that Russia attacked another country, which grossly violates international law, therefore Ukraine has legal grounds for self-defense.
“The right to self-defense is enshrined in the UN Charter, and we have the opportunity to help Ukraine defend this right without the intervention of NATO members and allies in the conflict,” Stoltenberg said.
During self-defense, as noted by the Secretary General, Ukraine can hit military targets outside the country, as it is due to aggression.
Stoltenberg also said that Ukraine cannot wait, it needs artillery ammunition and air defense systems immediately.
