At least 57 children were killed or injured in March, double the number in February.
In Ukraine, at least 604 civilians were killed or injured in March 2024. This is 20% more than in February 2024. This is stated in the report of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
It noted that the increase in civilian casualties in March was largely due to attacks by Russian armed forces using missiles and ammunition across Ukraine, as well as an increase in aerial bombardment near the front line.
At least 57 children were killed or injured in March, double the number in February, the report found. These losses were the result, in particular, of the increased use of guided and unguided aerial bombs.
At least 28 civilians were killed or injured by mines and explosive residues. Among them are 7 agricultural workers who face increased risk when they start working on the land during spring planting.
As noted by the UN, the majority of civilian casualties (93.5%), destruction of educational and medical institutions (98%) and critical infrastructure (95%) were recorded in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government.
Additionally, in March 2024, large-scale coordinated attacks on critical infrastructure destroyed or damaged at least 20 energy facilities across the country, temporarily disrupting access to electricity for millions people in major cities and rural areas. Water supply was also cut off in some areas.
According to the report, since the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2024, the Monitoring Mission has recorded 10,810 dead and 20,556 injured Ukrainian civilians.
Let us recall that the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Denise Brown, strongly condemned the attacks carried out by the Russians on the critical infrastructure of Ukraine on the night of March 22.
The UN Mission also documented the execution of at least 32 captured Ukrainian soldiers this winter.
