Peter Higgs predicted the existence of one of the elementary particles, the boson, 48 years before it was discovered.
The physicist and Nobel Prize laureate Peter Higgs died in the UK at the age of 94. The scientist died after a short illness on April 8. A statement about his death on Tuesday, April 9, was released by the service of journalism by the University of Edinburgh, where he is emeritus professor.
“Peter Higgs was an extraordinary individual – a truly brilliant scientist whose vision and imagination enriched our knowledge of the world around us. His pioneering work has inspired thousands of scientists, and his legacy will continue to inspire many generations to come,” said Peter Matheson, director. and vice-principal.Chancellor of the University.
Peter Higgs predicted the existence of one of the elementary particles, the boson, 48 years before it was discovered. Later he was named after the scientist. A documentary film titled “Elementary Particle Fever” was made about the Higgs boson.
“Almost 50 years passed before the existence of the particle was confirmed. Experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN finally confirmed the Higgs theory in 2012. For this work, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013 together with François Englert,” noted the University.
The hypothesis about the existence of the Higgs boson was put forward in 1964. It made it possible to solve the mechanism of mass formation, so later it began to be called the “God particle.” Only in 2012, scientists at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) announced the discovery of a particle during experiments, and in March 2013 they confirmed their discovery.
The following year, Professor Higgs received the Nobel Prize in Physics for this work, along with Belgian physicist François Englert.
“It’s great to be right sometimes,” Higgs said after receiving the Nobel Prize.
Higgs was also awarded various awards for his achievements in theoretical physics. In particular, he is the recipient of the Dirac Medal awarded by the Institute of Physics in London, as well as the Particle Physics and High Energy Physics Prizes of the European Physical Society. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Royal Society of London.
Let’s remember that Peter Higgs was recognized as the number one scientist in 2013.
