Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has created a commission to study foreign interference in the country’s elections.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) found that a Chinese intelligence network interfered in the country’s last two elections – in 2019 and 2021. Reuters reported this on Monday, April 8.
“We know that the People’s Republic of China secretly and fraudulently interfered in the elections in both 2019 and 2021,” the statement said.
It was noted that in both cases, this activity was pragmatic in nature and focused primarily on supporting those considered “pro-Chinese” or “neutral” on issues of interest to the PRC government.
“Government actors can successfully carry out foreign interference in Canada because it has few legal or political consequences. Foreign influence is low-risk and high-reward,” the CSIS analysis said.
According to the official 2021 census, there are approximately 1.7 million people of Chinese descent living in Canada, representing just under 5% of the total population.
According to media reports, China has tightened its support for Russia. Beijing provides Moscow with satellite imagery for military purposes, as well as microelectronics, machine tools for tanks, optics and fuel for missiles.
