Schröder continues to maintain contacts with Vladimir Putin, and also holds the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nord Stream 2, a subsidiary of Gazprom. In this regard, his colleagues in the SPD party, in particular Chancellor Olaf Scholz, were faced with the problem of how to congratulate Schröder on his anniversary.
As a result, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, for decades one of Schröder’s closest associates, limited himself to a formal official letter. However, in 2022, after the start of the Russian invasion, Steinmeier told BILD that he did not greet the former chancellor on his birthday.
The German government’s press service, BILD, said Scholz would congratulate his predecessor “as always.” However, the office does not disclose the text of the congratulatory letter.
He celebrated the last two anniversaries, when Schröder turned 60 and 70 years old, in Russia visiting Putin. The former chancellor is expected to celebrate his birthday in Berlin this time, but Steinmeier and Scholz will not attend his party.
