Tens of thousands of people marched with national flags. The rally was led by oppositionist Peter Madyar.
In Budapest on Saturday, April 6, a mass protest took place against the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Tens of thousands of people marched toward parliament, Reuters reports.
It was noted that the protesters shouted: “We are not afraid” and “Orban resign!” Many waved Hungarian flags.
The action was led by a former member of Hungary’s ruling party Fidesz, and now an oppositionist, 43-year-old Peter Madyar. He plans to create his own political party and challenge Fidesz in the European Parliament and local municipal elections, which will take place in June this year.
Magyar became a household name in February when he made high-profile comments about the internal workings of the government. He accused Antal Rogan, the minister who heads Orbán’s office, of running a centralized propaganda machine.
In March, Madyar published an archival recording in which his ex-wife Judit Varga, who recently resigned as the country’s Justice Minister, accused members of the prime minister’s inner circle of a corruption scandal. He also turned this recording over to law enforcement agencies.
This led to public outcry and protests among Hungarians against Orbán and his government.
