The Secretary General of NATO believes that the Western partners should strengthen Ukraine so that it can achieve an acceptable result at the negotiating table.
Ukraine may have to make compromises with Russia. But Ukraine itself must decide which. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this in an interview with the BBC, part of which was published on Saturday, April 6.
“Although we believe and hope that the war will end in the near future, we must support Ukraine for many years to come, building up its defenses to deter future aggression,” said the NATO secretary general.
He explained that military support is essential to repel Russian forces and force Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to abandon his goals of annexing Ukrainian lands.
At the same time, the Secretary General also suggested that Ukraine may also have to make concessions.
“Ultimately, it is up to Ukraine to decide what compromises it is willing to make, we must give it the opportunity to be in a position where it actually achieves an acceptable result at the negotiating table,” said he.
Stoltenberg also said he is not calling on Ukraine to make concessions now and added that “real peace” will be achieved when “Ukraine wins.”
Earlier, Stoltenberg said that NATO will change the format of aid to Ukraine. This will ensure its predictability and stability.
