Journalists, along with volunteers, identified the names of more than 50 thousand military personnel lost in Russia in the war in Ukraine.
At least 50,016 Russian troops have been killed since the full-scale war against Ukraine began. This was stated in a study of the publications of Mediazona and the Russian BBC service with reference to the data opening on Friday, April 5.
Journalists, with the help of a group of volunteers, identified, based on open sources, the names of more than 50 thousand Russian military personnel who died after the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
According to the publication, about 18% of the confirmed losses were prisoners, 13% were volunteers who went to the front, and 12% were mobilized. The dead also include at least 3,354 officers, including 1,016 elite command-level specialists. Thus, at least 43% of those killed were not related to the army at the beginning of the war, but their true number could be as high as 70%.

It was noted that the death toll in the Russian military rose sharply after the announcement of mobilization in the fall of 2022 – from more than 1,000 dead in September of that year to around 3,000 dead in January 2023.
Since the autumn of 2023, against the backdrop of the offensive of Russian troops in the Donetsk region, the losses of the Russian army in the amount of 550-600 people per week have been confirmed, journalists note. In addition, the rate of increase of losses in the period from October 2023 to April 2024 continues to be one and a half to two times higher than the average for the first 12 months of the invasion of Ukraine.
