Europe is now experiencing the biggest migration crisis since Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
Russia’s invasion has caused the biggest migration crisis in Ukraine and Europe, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a speech at the Global Policy Forum on Monday, June 20.
“We have to do everything so that the displaced people can go home,” Zelensky said.
He recalled that as a result of the war, 12 million people lost their homes and security.
“The Russian army is trying to find the strength to invade Kharkiv again. We have removed the occupation of this region, but they want it again, we see it. And there are one and a half million inhabitants. They continue to bomb Nikolaev, and there are half a million inhabitants. They want to capture and completely destroy Slavyansk, and its 100 thousand inhabitants, “he said.
At the same time, Zelensky noted the need to help the Ukrainian economy and restore its infrastructure.
“Not just to restore normal living conditions, but to build a modern and safe life,” he said.
Zelensky noted that the EU should do a little more for Ukraine than its members.
“What should the European Union do for us? It should consider Ukraine as an equal state. And everything it does for member countries, it should do for Ukraine. And because we are now an outpost for protecting bright values, then for us, most likely, we have to do less than all other states. Because it is more difficult for us now, “he said.
The President recalled that this week Ukraine could receive the status of a candidate country for the EU. “It will only increase our strength,” he said.
The President also thanked the EU countries that are fighting Russia with sanctions, political methods and supporting the Ukrainian army with weapons.
According to the UN, the number of refugees from Ukraine who have received temporary protection status in European countries has reached 3.407 million. Several million more citizens are abroad without refugee status.
And according to the European Union, since the start of the war, more than 5.7 million people have left Ukraine, of which more than 2.8 million Ukrainians have returned home.
