The German capital Berlin is preparing to accept more refugees. The Berlin Senate has extended the use of the former Tegel airport as a refugee center until the end of 2025.

In addition, there will be 1,000 additional places for protection applicants. Now about 5.4 thousand people live in the center, the vast majority of whom are from Ukraine.
The city also decided to build new container towns to accommodate refugees. By 2026, about 6 thousand places should appear in 16 locations, writes rbb24.
Container cities will be built in nine districts of the city. The smallest facility is designed for 150 places, the largest – for 620. In some cases, it is planned to build dormitories with a shared kitchen and bathrooms, in others – mini-apartments with a small kitchen and a bathroom for two rooms.
According to Social Affairs Senator Cancel Kiziltepe, the so-called “Housing Container Program 2.0” is necessary to accommodate refugees in the coming years. It will help reduce the number of people in temporary shelters.
The project will pay off if the housing is used for at least three years. However, it is already known that some of the buildings will, if necessary, be used at least until 2030.
Some members of the Senate believe that container cities are better for integration than mass housing, such as in Tegel. But for this it is necessary to build infrastructure nearby and increase the number of places in schools and kindergartens.
Lichtenberg mayor Martin Schäfer said all four planned sites in his area were unsuitable for housing refugees. There are not enough places in schools and kindergartens, social and integration services, and insufficient health care.
Schaefer called for a fair distribution of refugees throughout the city, rather than a “unilateral burden on the eastern part in particular.”
The district administration of Reinickendorf is surprised by the Senate’s plans. Only from the press did management learn that they were planning to build two new container sites in the area. The administration explained that Reinickendorf is already among the leaders in housing refugees in Berlin. They emphasize that the social infrastructure of the area is overloaded and integration cannot be successful.
Rakurs wrote that on March 12, a large-scale fire broke out at the refugee accommodation center in Tegel. The dormitory area of 1 thousand square meters burned to the ground. There were no casualties, but the 300 people who lived there lost all their property.
