The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced a new batch of astronauts, a program that is very popular among Americans. Applications for participation can be submitted until April 2, but only US citizens can do so, writes The New York Times.
“It’s basically a very popular program. And when I say ‘popular,’ I’m really sublimating it,” said April Jordan, NASA’s astronaut selection manager.
The last time NASA announced a competition to recruit a group of astronauts was in 2020. Then more than 12 thousand people applied for it. It took the agency a year and a half to review them.
In the end, NASA selected only 10 candidates—that’s 0.083% of the applicants. In comparison, 3.5% of applicants enrolled at Harvard University.
To become a NASA astronaut, you must also pass the astronaut physical exam.
NASA sets a relatively high bar for education: a master’s degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics, plus at least three years of relevant professional experience.
The agency strives to be open, so it does not set age restrictions or vision requirements.
“We want the group of astronaut candidates we’ve chosen to reflect the country they represent,” said April Jordan.
Many applicants are attracted by the potential opportunity to become the first astronauts to walk on Mars. NASA aims to complete this mission in the 2030s.
But according to Victor Glover, a veteran of the astronaut corps that plans to fly to the moon in 2025, applicants should also be mindful of the sacrifices they will have to make along the way.
“A trip to Mars lasts six to nine months. You will be away from your family for one to three years. Think about it, are you really ready for this?” – he addresses those who wish.
It will be recalled that NASA delayed its Artemis program to land astronauts on the Moon to give them more time to prepare.
