Last December, the leaders of EU member states at a summit in Brussels approved the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
Negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union should begin in June 2024. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced this on Tuesday, March 19, in his evening video message.
Zelensky noted that he discussed this issue with the head of the European Council, Charles Michel.
“We are preparing for a meeting of the European Council. And for important decisions in Europe this year. Economic ones, in particular, on the continued liberalization of trade between Ukraine and the European Union – this is one on the essential elements of our stability while defending against Russian aggression. We are also preparing political decisions. In particular, for us in Ukraine and for the whole of Europe, it is very important that the real negotiations on Ukraine’s membership are will start in June, without delay. And this will be the right political signal that Europe is strong enough and will definitely not come under Russian pressure,” Zelensky said.
It was previously reported that the president spoke by phone with the head of the European Council, Charles Michel.
We remind you that a week ago the European Commission approved the draft framework of negotiations with Ukraine. This was announced by EC Executive Vice President Maros Sefcovic in Strasbourg.
