In the town of Liptovsky Mikulas, a 49-year-old woman suffered a shoulder injury, and a 72-year-old man was treated for a head wound, the BBC reports.
Police reportedly chased the bear out of the city and into the forest.
Videos of the incident that appeared on social networks show the bear running along the road, and in one of them, it lunges at a person lying on the sidewalk.
The news comes a day after a 31-year-old tourist from Belarus died on the evening of March 15, allegedly trying to escape from a brown bear in the neighboring Low Tatras mountains.
She was walking with a friend through a dense forest when they were attacked by a bear. According to the man, he and the woman ran away in different directions. Her body was later found by a search dog.
There have been several bear attacks recorded in Slovakia in recent years, including one fatal attack in 2021 that was reported to be the first in Slovakia in a century.
Better environmental protection in Central and Eastern Europe since 1989 has seen bears return to their natural habitats in the Carpathian Mountains, stretching from Romania through western Ukraine to Slovakia and Poland. In this situation:
- Some members of Slovakia’s ruling coalition are calling for weaker protections for bears so that population growth can be controlled through hunting.
- Slovakia’s Environment Ministry said that together with Romania it would present a proposal at the next EU Environment Council to review the status of the bears as their numbers mean they are no longer endangered and could be selectively shot;
- However, researchers say there has been no explosion in the estimated bear population in Slovakia and it remains stable at around 1,275 individuals.
