The political leadership of the Russian Federation and those involved in organizing the “elections” will face the consequences of these illegal actions.
The European Union has condemned the illegal holding of “elections” of the President of Russia in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Their results will not be recognized and the organizers will face the consequences. This was stated in a statement by High Representative Josep Borrell, issued on Monday, March 18.
“The so-called elections in these territories are another clear violation by Russia of international law, including the UN Charter, as well as the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Refers to two resolutions of the UNGA on October 12, 2022 and March 27 , 2014, we call for respect for the internationally recognized borders and sovereignty of Ukraine,” the statement said.
The European Union does not and has never recognized either the holding of the so-called elections on the territory of Ukraine or their results. “They are invalid and cannot have any legal consequences.
The European Union has generally criticized the presidential “elections” in the Russian Federation, noting that they took place against the backdrop of increasing violations of civil and political rights, and that many candidates were denied the chance to run. In addition, the EU regrets the decision of the Russian authorities not to invite OSCE observers.
Note that Russia’s Central Election Commission says it has processed 99.76% of the protocols, according to which Vladimir Putin won with a result of 87.29%. They plan to officially announce him as the winner on March 21.
Let’s remember that more than 50 member countries of the UN have condemned the “election” of the Russian President held by Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
President Vladimir Zelensky said that everything Russia is doing in the occupied territory of Ukraine is a crime. There is no legitimate imitation of the election and it is not possible.
