EU High Representative Josep Borrell criticized the pontiff’s call for surrender.

The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, commented on the words of Pope Francis about the “white flag” and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. He noted that he did not consider such a call correct, RTVE reports.

Borrell recalled that he “casually touched on” the pontiff’s remarks during his speech to the UN Security Council last week.

“And in this speech, I myself did not hesitate to say that His Holiness the Pope entered a garden where no one invited him,” said the European diplomat.

In talking about it, Borrell used a Spanish idiom that means “to bring trouble upon oneself.”

The head of European diplomacy stressed that he does not consider it right to “invite Ukraine to surrender.”

“On the contrary, it’s time to continue helping him,” he added.

Let’s remember that in an interview, Pope Francis said that Ukraine “must have the courage to raise the white flag.” And although the press service of the Holy See later explained that the Pope did not mean surrender, but a return to negotiations, these words caused a wave of criticism in the world. In particular, the German bishops criticized the Pope’s “white flag” statement.
