The US Department of Defense commented on the initiative of Republicans in Congress about an alternative bill to help Ukraine.
A bill giving more than $60 billion to Ukraine would be a better way to help than offering to loan it money instead. Deputy Pentagon Speaker Sabrina Singh announced this in a briefing on Thursday, March 14.
So, he commented on House Republicans’ initiatives to offer Ukraine a loan instead of direct aid.
“I know negotiations are going on in Congress. I can’t get ahead of things. What we need now is a bill with additional funding (which contains more than $60 billion),” Singh said.
He emphasized that Ukraine is now at war, and, obviously, it will be very difficult for it to repay these loans.
It was previously reported that the Republicans in Congress, instead of putting the Senate aid bill to Ukraine to a vote, decided to create an alternative bill in which part of the non-military aid is proposed to be allocated in the form of a loan However, a vote on this is not expected until April.
Meanwhile, the Democrats do not agree with this development of events and on March 12 began to collect signatures to introduce a $95 billion aid bill for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, which passed Speaker Mike Johnson. Within the first two days, he collected 177 signatures out of the 218 required. On the third day, not a single new signature appeared.
