On Thursday, March 14, members of the German Parliament voted by a majority of votes against the initiative of the CDU and CSU. During the debate, the leader of the SPD parliamentary faction, Rolf Mützenich, defended Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s refusal to supply long-range weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This was reported by Der Standart.
A turning point is not for political players. Reason, sanity and clarity are required. This is exactly what the Federal Chancellor is doing in the discussions that he leads as head of government, he emphasized.
690 deputies took part in the vote, which was important for Kyiv. 190 deputies voted in favor of supplying the missiles, but 495 were against it. Five more parliamentarians abstained.
As you know, long-range German cruise missiles of the Taurus system have a long firing range. They can hit targets at a distance of up to 500 km with high accuracy. These weapons are designed to destroy enemy ammunition depots, secure command centers and vital military infrastructure far behind the front lines.
Let us recall that on March 11, German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said that Berlin’s position on the issue of supplying Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine has not changed. And DW reported that there are disagreements in Germany over the possibility of circular supplies of long-range missiles with Britain in order to help Ukraine.
