Until now, there are no quantitative restrictions on grain imports from Russia, while such restrictions exist for Ukrainian imports.
Next week, the European Commission plans to present a proposal for quotas on grain imports from Russia and Belarus. These restrictions should be introduced due to protests from farmers in Europe and calls from Ukraine to take this step. This was reported on Wednesday, March 13, by Polish RMF FM, citing an unnamed European diplomat.
It was noted that the proposal of the European Commission will provide quotas for food products from the Russian Federation and Belarus. The EU wants to avoid a complete embargo, fearing price volatility and a negative impact on the world’s poorer countries.
The transit of agricultural products of Russia and Belarus will continue to be allowed, the material said.
“Until now, there are no quantitative restrictions on grain imports from Russia, while such restrictions exist for Ukrainian imports. Such a decision has become difficult to support from a moral and political point of view, ” wrote RMF FM.
According to Eurostat, more than 1.5 million tons of grain will be imported into the EU in 2023, compared to 970 thousand tons in 2022. Thus, the problem with Russian agricultural products has become real.
Remind us that last week Poland adopted a resolution on sanctions on agricultural products from the Russian Federation and Belarus.
Before this, Latvia banned the import of agricultural products from the Russian Federation and Belarus.
