This was reported on March 12 by the G4Media newspaper.
Romania participates in all NATO missions, we contribute to the Balkans, to the security of the Black Sea, we certainly support Ukraine,” he emphasized.
Iohannis says the Alliance needs a renewed view of its mission, so his experience will come in handy. He also believes that Eastern Europe should make a valuable contribution to the discussions and decisions taken in the Alliance.
In October 2024, Jens Stoltenberg is due to leave the post of NATO Secretary General, which he has held since 2014.
Earlier, Politico wrote that the new EU members are dissatisfied with the likely appointment of Dutch Prime Minister Rutte to the post of NATO Secretary General.
New EU members refer to states that joined the bloc after 2004. These are the states of Central and Eastern Europe.
Among the contenders for the post were Romanian President Iohannis, whose government notified NATO of its potential candidacy in February, and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, who has not yet submitted her candidacy but expressed interest last year.
Callas is also seen as Borrell’s successor as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs.
