The Vice-President of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis, spoke about the demands of Polish farmers blocking the Ukrainian border due to the influx of agri-food products from outside the EU.
According to him, although theoretically we agree with the demands of the protesters in Poland, it is not known what can be done.
“If you look at this situation, it raises a bunch of questions. After all, Poland unilaterally banned the import of Ukrainian grain to Poland itself. Therefore, the question arises, why are they protesting against on grain from Ukraine if it’s already banned? Ban what’s already there And so it’s banned?” – Dombrovskis asked rhetorical questions in an interview with the Ukrainian telethon.
He noted that the legality of this ban could be disputed, and pointed out that the European Commission had also sent a warning to Poland, Hungary and Slovakia.
“If the situation there does not improve, we are also ready to continue and launch an infringement procedure against these countries,” Dombrovskis emphasized.
He noted that the EU has already proposed extending the trade liberalization agreement until June 2025 and including additional guarantees for sensitive agricultural products such as poultry and sugar.
“Other measures have been taken – for example, the ability to respond in the case of violations in one or more EU member states. Therefore, in a certain sense, these things should give assurance to farmers in Poland. But the work to solve this issue continues,” Dombrovskis concluded.
We remind you that agricultural protests in Poland, as in other EU countries, have been going on for several weeks. Polish farmers’ demands include the return of the European Union’s Green Deal rules, closing borders against the influx of agri-food products from outside the EU and protecting livestock farming in Poland.
