Ukrainian Ambassador to the Netherlands Alexander Karasevich stated this during a speech at the 105th session of the OPCW Executive Council, the Ukrinform agency reports.
Russia consistently and constantly violates the rules of war and continues to use toxic chemicals prohibited by the Chemical Weapons Convention against the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” he emphasized.
The ambassador noted that the Russian army is rapidly increasing the volume and expanding the geography of its use of toxic chemicals, which is also a violation of the convention.
In 2024 alone, we recorded 346 cases of the use of toxic chemicals – this is equivalent to six violations of the convention by the Russian Federation per day,” he emphasized. — The use of chemical weapons is considered by the enemy as a means of achieving tactical superiority and demoralizing the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The purpose of use is to poison Ukrainian Armed Forces military personnel and push them out of fortified positions.
Karasevich noted that:
- As of March 1, 1 thousand 60 cases of use of chemical substances by Russia are being investigated. There are currently 72 confirmed cases of such use;
- the main means of delivering ammunition filled with dangerous chemicals are UAVs that drop gas grenades of the K-51 type (71%);
- as of February 2024, 946 cases of medical care were provided to Ukrainian military personnel in connection with poisoning by an unknown substance that occurred in combat areas were registered in Ukrainian healthcare institutions.
He noted that Ukraine considers these documented cases and requests from Ukrainian Armed Forces military personnel for medical help to be evidence of systematicity and a gross violation of the provisions of the convention by the aggressor state.
The ambassador added that Ukrainian authorities are actively collecting evidence related to Russian violations of the convention and will provide the technical secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and participating states with information on the progress of the investigation in the prescribed manner.
