Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia should take place with the help of international forces, the Vatican leader believes.
Pope Francis said Ukraine “must have the courage to raise the white banner” and start negotiations with Russia. The pope announced this in an interview with a Swiss television and radio company, Reuters wrote.
The head of the Catholic Church was asked about his position in the debate between those who say Ukraine should surrender because it has failed to fight against Russia, and those who say it would legitimize Russia’s actions.
“This is an interpretation. But I believe that the stronger is the one who looks at the situation, thinks about the people, has the courage to raise the white flag and negotiate. The word “negotiation” is a bold word . When you see that you have lost, what is not good, you have to have the courage to negotiate,” said Pope Francis.
According to the head of the Vatican, negotiations should take place with the help of international states.
“You can feel shame, but how many dead will end this war? We have to negotiate in time, find a country that can be a mediator,” said the Pope, reminding Turkey of such countries.
Let’s remember that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey is ready to host a peace summit to resolve the war in Ukraine, in which Russia will also participate. President Vladimir Zelensky responded that Ukraine does not see Russian representatives at this summit.
