Voting on a new relief package will be pushed back to April because of a planned two-week recess in Congress.
House Speaker Mike Johnson and the heads of key committees are now working to create a new draft aid package for Ukraine. This was reported by NBC News on Saturday, March 9.
Politicians believe the alternative bill will pass Congress without removing conservatives who oppose additional funding for Ukraine.
However, the development is now at an earlier stage. It is still far from being fully realized. Republicans want to be ready to pass the document as soon as Congress approves the budget laws.
The vote will be pushed back to April to accommodate Congress’ planned two-week recess at the end of March, two of the sources said.
Republicans are proposing to earmark some of the non-military aid in the form of loans. However, under this plan, economic aid to the Ukrainian government and support for its long-term efforts to rebuild the country will also depend on the debt. The collateral must use Russian assets confiscated by the United States.
As you know, on February 13, the US Senate supported a package that provides more than $60 billion for Ukraine, mainly for military aid. But the bill was never considered in the House of Representatives because of Speaker Johnson’s refusal to bring it to a vote.
Currently, US congressmen are preparing an alternative bill to support allies, particularly Ukraine. In it, part of the benefit can be converted into a loan, and its processing is delayed for several weeks.
