Human traffickers sent Indian citizens to the Russian Federation to participate in the war in Ukraine. Some of the men were seriously injured on the battlefield.

India dismantled a vast human trafficking network that lured young men to Russia with promises of work and then forced them to fight in the war against Ukraine. Reuters wrote this on Friday, March 8.

About 35 people were sent to Russia under this scheme. Traffickers operating in several Indian states recruit people through social media and local agents.

Indian nationals who were victims of human trafficking were found to have been trained in combat and assigned to advance bases in the Russian-Ukrainian war zone against their will. Some of the men were seriously injured on the battlefield.

Law enforcement conducted searches, including in New Delhi and Mumbai, which resulted in the seizure of 50 million rupees ($605,000), as well as several documents and electronic records. It was also reported that several suspects were detained for questioning.

Earlier it was reported about seven Indian citizens who said that in Russia they were forced to go to the front to fight in Ukraine. The Indian Foreign Ministry has asked Russia to early release some of the Indians working in the Russian army on “auxiliary work.”

The Indian Embassy in the Russian Federation has reported the death of its citizen Shri Mohammed Asphan. According to media reports, a 30-year-old man died in Ukraine after he and several other Indian nationals were tricked by agents and recruited as “helpers” for the Russian military.
