Boris Pistorius has called for an end to the debate about the possible deployment of Western ground forces in Ukraine.
Discussions about the possible deployment of Western troops on Ukrainian territory must be stopped. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said this during a visit to Finland, FAZ reported on Friday, March 8.
He noted that discussions about the deployment of Western troops in Ukraine are ongoing, but, in his opinion, they should be stopped.
“No one really wants the ground forces to be in Ukraine, there is a discussion about it now, so we should stop it at this stage,” said the head of the German Defense Ministry.
Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkänen, whom Pistorius met, also rejected the possibility of deploying troops. He added that Ukraine’s allies should focus elsewhere.
“Right now, nobody supports the idea of ’troops on the ground’. But everybody supports more aid in the form of arms, ammunition and money, and that’s what we should focus on now,” he said.
It should be noted that on Monday, February 26, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, said that some NATO and EU member countries are discussing the possibility of sending their military to Ukraine after concluding bilateral agreements. He hastened to declare that Slovakia “will not take such a step,” but will respect the decisions of NATO countries that agree to send troops to Ukraine.
Later, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke about the possibility of sending military personnel to Ukraine, and French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal also did not rule out the possibility of sending French military personnel to Ukraine.
And the day before, Macron named the condition for sending troops to Ukraine.
