Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson presents the signed Swedish accession documents to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Sweden has completed the official procedure for obtaining full NATO membership. It was found out on the evening of Thursday, March 7.
In Washington, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson presented US Secretary of State Antony Blinken with Sweden’s signed accession documents. This is the last formal step in the process for Sweden to be considered a full member of NATO.
“Let me be the first to welcome Sweden as the 32nd member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization,” Blinken said at the document acceptance ceremony.
In turn, Kristersson commented on this historic event in Twitter.
“Sweden is now a member of NATO. Thank you to all allies for welcoming us as 32 members. We will strive for unity, solidarity and burden-sharing, and fully adhere to the values of the Washington Treaty: freedom, democracy, individual freedom and the rule of law. Stronger together,” he wrote.
Earlier on Thursday, Sweden’s accession protocol to NATO was made public. This became possible after the last – Hungarian – instrument of ratification for the accession of Sweden arrived in Washington.
The Swedish flag-raising ceremony at the Alliance headquarters in Brussels will take place on Monday, March 11.
