Ukrainian special forces are fighting in Africa against Russian soldiers and mercenaries.

In the summer of 2023, President Vladimir Zelensky sent special forces from Ukraine to Sudan. He did this at the request of the local military leader Abdel Fatt al-Burhan to help in the fight against the rebels. The Wall Street Journal writes about this with reference to the Sudanese and Ukrainian soldiers participating in the operation, as well as to video recordings.
It is noted that the Ukrainian leader agreed to such a step because Burkhan secretly supplied Ukraine with weapons immediately after the full-scale Russian invasion. In addition, the local rebels were supported by the Russian private military company Wagner, which mined gold in Sudan.
The material states that the first wave of a Ukrainian unit of almost 100 soldiers, mainly from the Timur GUR unit, landed on a charter plane in Sudan in mid-August 2023. After this, specialists began fighting to drive the rebel forces out of the capital Khartoum.
The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, Kirill Budanov, refused to comment on whether Ukrainian troops were sent to Sudan. Ukraine is trying to strike at Russian military units in different parts of the world.
The speaker of President Vladimir Zelensky also refused to confirm or deny the sending of Ukrainian troops to Sudan.
