Alberto Otarola denies any violations of Peruvian labor laws or other wrongdoing on his part.
Peru’s Prime Minister Alberto Otarola has announced his decision to resign over allegations of influence peddling. This was reported by France24.
Otarola is acting chief of staff to Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, who ordered him home after an official trip to Canada amid the scandal that erupted over the weekend.
The television program Panorama released a recording of Otarola’s conversation with a 25-year-old woman, Yazire Pinedo, who signed two contracts this year totaling $14,000 to do archival and administrative work for to the government. In one of the recordings, a man claiming to be the prime minister told her: “You know it’s annoying, it hurts, but you also know I love you.”
As you know, the 57-year-old Otarola is married and has five children.
He denies any violations of Peruvian labor laws or other wrongdoing on his part.
“I understand the seriousness of the political events, but I repeat that I did nothing illegal,” he said.
Peru’s presidential office had earlier said it would listen to Otarola before deciding what to do with his statement. Right and left opposition parties are demanding Otarola’s resignation.
It will be remembered that in Scotland, Health Minister Michael Matheson, who ran up an £11,000 roaming bill on his parliamentary iPad while on holiday, has resigned.
It was also reported that Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov submitted a letter of resignation to parliament on March 5.
