Before the Russian Federation’s full invasion of Ukraine, about 30 thousand people lived in Avdiivka.
About 700 residents of Avdeevka did not leave the city and thus found themselves under the occupation of the Russian Federation. Pavel Dyachenko, inspector of the communications department of the National Police in the Donetsk region and a member of the White Angel evacuation detachment, spoke about this on Monday, February 26, Radio Liberty reports.
He emphasized that this figure is approximate and suggested that in reality there may be a few more or fewer people in Avdiivka.
Dyachenko emphasized that when White Angels personnel spoke to the residents of Avdievka, no one openly supported Russia and the occupiers.
“When the White Angels police personnel contacted people every day, evacuated, helped, brought humanitarian aid, no one personally said to their faces that they were waiting for Russia. No, just one person to quietly receive humanitarian aid or something else,” – he said.
It is worth recalling that before the full-scale invasion, about 30 thousand Ukrainians lived in Avdiivka.
According to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since October, Russian troops have lost at least 17 thousand soldiers and officers during the attack on Avdievka.
On the evening of February 17, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Alexander Syrsky, announced the decision to withdraw Ukrainian troops from Avdiivka, which was under threat of enemy encirclement.
