The sanctions will ensure that Vladimir Putin pays a higher price for his aggression abroad and repression inside Russia, the American leader said.
US authorities have introduced a large-scale package of sanctions against Russia for its aggressive war in Ukraine and the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. American President Joe Biden announced this, the White House press service reported on Friday, February 23.
“Today I am announcing more than 500 new sanctions against Russia for its ongoing war of occupation in Ukraine and the death of Alexei Navalny,” Biden said.
According to him, the sanctions are aimed at individuals associated with Navalny’s imprisonment, as well as against Russia’s financial sector, defense industrial base, procurement networks and sanctions evaders on many continents.
“They (punishments, – ed.) guarantee that Putin will pay a higher price for his foreign aggression and domestic repression,” the American leader said.
In addition, the United States is introducing new export restrictions on nearly 100 organizations for “providing covert support to the Russian military machine.”
“We are taking steps to further reduce Russia’s income from energy sales. And I have instructed my team to strengthen support for civil society, independent media and those fighting for democracy around the world,” Biden concluded.
Earlier on Friday, the European Union adopted the 13th package of sanctions against Russia. The restrictions apply to another 106 individuals and 88 legal entities responsible for actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.
The day before it became known that Great Britain had introduced new sanctions against the Russian Federation. They are aimed at the Kremlin’s main sources of income, restricting trade in metals, diamonds and energy, as well as against ammunition suppliers.
