The departure of the Ukrainian defense forces from Avdiivka was commented on by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.

According to him, lessons have been learned from Avdiivka, but the city will definitely return to Ukrainian control. The head of the defense department announced this on Facebook on February 17.
It is noted that among the lessons learned is that Ukraine needs modern air defense systems to prevent Russian aircraft from using winged aerial bombs.
The defense forces also need long-range weapons to destroy enemy warehouses and large quantities of artillery shells.
We are constantly working on this. Fortifications – we build and strengthen. The decision to protect people is the right one. “We will return Avdeevka,” Umerov wrote.
Let us recall that on February 16, the commander of the Tavria OSUV, Alexander Tarnavsky, announced the decision to withdraw Ukrainian units from the Zenit position on the southeastern outskirts of Avdeevka. And on February 17, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky, said that the Defense Forces had left the city to avoid being surrounded by the enemy.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said leaving the city was a logical and professional decision for the sake of military lives.
The Russians have been actively storming Avdeevka since the fall of 2023 and suffered colossal losses. In particular, Moscow used its special forces for “meat assaults” during the battles for Avdeevka.
