All people who had close contact with the sick resident and his pet were contacted.
Oregon authorities have identified the first case of bubonic plague in a US state in nearly 10 years. Metro reported it.
It was noted that a resident of Deschutes County, located southeast of the city of Portland, was infected through contact with his pet cat.
According to Deschutes County doctor Richard Fawcett, “all individuals who had close contact with the sick resident and his pet were contacted and given medication to prevent illness.”
Bubonic plague is a bacterial disease transmitted by fleas that live on wild rats. This disease is known for two epidemics in England in the last millennium, one of which, known as the Black Death, killed between 40% and 60% of the country’s population in the late 1340s.
Another outbreak of disease in the 1660s, called the Great Plague, killed about a fifth of the people living in London at the time.
Let’s remember that a few years ago a case of bubonic plague was discovered in northwest China.
