The event occurred on the evening of February 8. This was reported by the press services of the SBU, State Tax Service and the Volyn Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
The security service, together with border guards, carried out a special operation, as a result of which they detained a group of people trying to arrange wholesale supplies of cannabis resin (hashish) to a neighboring state, the security service notes.
The attackers turned out to be three residents of Volyn.
They used a drone to smuggle drugs – they tied packaged briquettes with a narcotic substance. For the sake of secrecy, they tried to act at night, the SBU notes. “However, thanks to the coordinated work of law enforcement officers, the criminal activities of smugglers were stopped in time.
During the search they were found:
- drones;
- components for drones;
- other material evidence.
The detained Volyn residents were informed of suspicion of an unfinished attempt to smuggle a particularly dangerous drug on a particularly large scale by prior conspiracy (part 2 of article 28, part 3 of article 15 and part 3 of article 305 of the Criminal Code). They face up to 12 years in prison.
The court chose a preventive measure for them in the form of detention.
The drone and the drug, the cost of which is about 13 million UAH, were seized. Law enforcement also seized three cars that the smugglers used to complete the transaction.
Border guards also published a video showing the moment the drone was neutralized. It shows that the drone was hit by small arms fire, which likely forced the aircraft to land.
