Trump made an aggressive bet on the immigration card a year before the November presidential election.
The US is suffering from illegal immigration. Moreover, it can also be seen in Ukraine. A record influx of migrants to the United States in a matter of months has escalated into a large-scale political crisis that has left Ukraine without American aid. Donald Trump is hoping that a wave of discontent will return him to the White House and hamper efforts to solve the refugee crisis before the November election.
Records of illegal immigrants
300 thousand people crossed the Mexican border in December 2023—an absolute monthly record. No January data yet, but the trend is the same. At this rate, about 2.5 million migrants will arrive in the United States, where 336 million people already live, throughout the year, as in both post-Covid years.
Polls show that 17% of Americans consider immigration to be the country’s main problem. Trump took advantage of this and made an aggressive bet on the immigration card a year before the November presidential election.
Trump says the visitors are “destroying the country” and “poisoning the blood of the country,” because “a large percentage of those coming are people from prisons and mental hospitals, and also terrorists.”
Money issue
Republicans in Congress backed Trump and refused to approve the allocation of $60 billion in financial and military aid to Ukraine, without which it would be more difficult for them to fend off Russian aggression. They demanded that Democrats link the aid issue to tightening southern border controls.
Democrats argued for months, but eventually gave in and made unprecedented concessions. On Monday night, it was announced that the two factions in the Democratic-controlled Senate had come to an agreement. The package includes 60 billion in aid to Ukraine, 14 billion for Israel, and another 20 billion for strengthening the border.
However, both Trump and his supporters who control the other side of Congress, the House of Representatives, have refused to accept the compromise.
Trump has made no secret of the fact that he needs Biden’s failures on foreign policy and transition before the election. If Republicans block the compromise bill, Ukraine and the Mexican border will be in dire straits. If it is adopted, Trump himself will lose points.
“This bill is a wonderful gift to Democrats and a mortal threat to the Republican Party,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social network on Monday.
Biden responded by accusing Republicans of not caring about the border and that their only goal was to “score political points against me.”
Biden is suffering
The president is losing votes because of the migration crisis, on both sides. Moderate Democrats are unhappy with the influx of migrants, liberals are unhappy with Biden’s willingness to tighten policies. Add to this the electoral damage from strong support for Israel’s operation in Gaza and Biden’s age (81 years old) – and it becomes clear why the times are against Biden and he is losing the polls to Trump.
