The enemy is trying to destroy the region’s critical infrastructure to make it difficult for people to stay in the region during the winter.
The Russian army daily conducts 1,500 to 2,500 strikes on the territory of the Donetsk region. The head of Donetsk OVA Vadim Filashkin said this on Tuesday, February 6, Reuters reports.
“Such dense and heavy shelling happens almost every day,” he said.
The head of the OVA recalled that currently 57% of the region is occupied by the Russians, but the enemy intends to capture the region completely.
“The region has been on the front line of the war since 2014, when Russian-backed proxies captured the region’s capital, the city of Donetsk, as well as several other major cities. And since Russia launched a a massive invasion in 2022, this is where many of the most brutal and longest battles of this war have taken place,” he said.
In particular, Filashkin said that the city of Avdeevka, where the largest coke plant in Europe is located, has been the target of a massive Russian attack since October last year and is now 95-98% destroyed.
“In the past month alone, the enemy has dropped about 200 guided bombs on Avdiivka. They are completely destroying it,” he said.
Filashkin added that there are about 1,000 residents left in the city, whom he has always urged to leave for safe territories.
He also added that the enemy is destroying other cities in the region where people still live to make their stay there impossible.
A new counter-offensive by the Ukrainian defenders may begin in the spring immediately after the offensive of the Russian invaders is completely exhausted. Earlier it was reported that Ukrainian troops retreated from the village of Krokhmalnoye, Kupyansky district, Kharkov region. The Ukrainian Armed Forces consolidated their positions with previously prepared reserve positions.
