Production of 155-mm artillery shells in the United States should increase from 28 thousand in October 2023 to almost 37 thousand in April and about 60 thousand in October of this year. And in 2025, the United States wants to further increase ammunition production – from almost 75 thousand shells in April to 100 thousand in October. This was stated by the head of the US Army procurement department, Doug Bush, reports Defense One.
The increase in ammunition production is partly due to a new plant being built in Texas, he said. They will introduce a completely new way of producing shells, using the latest technology that the United States has never used before.
It is noted that the lack of ammunition, especially large artillery shells of 155 mm caliber, does not allow Ukraine to catch up with the occupiers in terms of the volume of fire. Ukrainian defense forces now fire about 2,000 shells a day, about one-fifth of Russia’s output.
Bush noted that the widespread use of 155mm shells could force Washington to reconsider how much it needs to stockpile.
Let us recall that on January 31, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said that the EU would not be able to supply Ukraine with the promised million artillery shells until March 2024. By the beginning of spring, the European Union will fulfill its promise by only 52%.
