The State Department said it was disappointed that the pro-government party blocked the possibility of voting by boycotting the session.
Washington has been frustrated by the position of the pro-government Hungarian Fidesz party, which has disrupted the process of ratifying Sweden’s membership in NATO. This is what the Deputy Head of the US State Department, Vedant Patel, said in a briefing on Monday, February 5.
“Hungary is the last NATO ally to ratify (Sweden’s) membership, and we are glad that the Hungarian parliament held today’s meeting. At the same time, we are disappointed that the pro-government party blocked the possibility of voting by -boycott the session ,” he told Patel.
At the same time, he noted that Hungary confirmed Sweden’s entry into NATO and agreed that this country fulfilled its obligations. In this regard, a representative of the US administration expressed hope that the process of ratifying Sweden’s membership in the Alliance will proceed quickly.
We remind you that the representatives of the ruling party Fidesz of Hungary did not attend an extraordinary meeting of the parliament, where a vote was planned on Sweden’s application to join NATO.
