The creation of a new fund became urgent because the EU failed to meet its promise to provide Ukraine with 1 million artillery shells by March.
The European Union is planning to create a military fund to help Ukraine within the framework of the European Peace Fund. About this Saturday, February 3, stated EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell after an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers.
“Today there was an important discussion about military aid for Ukraine. We discussed the situation on the battlefield, the situation with military supplies, the creation of an aid fund for Ukraine, which, I hope, will agreed within the next few days within the framework of the European Peace Fund,” said the diplomat.
Borrell added that the EU maintains a tough position regarding support for Ukraine.
“Ukraine needs more and faster support. This help must come now. The success of Ukraine is critical not only for Ukraine, but also for peace and stability in Europe,” stressed he emphasized.
It should be noted that the initiator of the creation of the military support fund for Ukraine was Borrell. He proposed that the EU create it within the framework of the existing European Peace Fund at a cost of 20 billion euros over the next four years. Money from this fund will be spent on the purchase and supply of military equipment and weapons to Ukraine, as well as to strengthen the defense industry in Europe.
Earlier, European Commissioner Thierry Breton said that the EU has significantly increased the production of ammunition and will increase this capacity to 1 million ammunition per year in March and to 2 million in 2025.
