The multi-role fighter Eurofighter Typhoon is the result of a joint effort between several independent companies from the UK, Germany and Spain.
Turkey is set to buy 40 Eurofighter Typhoons despite reaching a $23 billion deal with the United States to buy F-16s. Reuters reported this on Thursday, February 1.
It is indicated that Ankara is in talks with the UK and Spain on the purchase of the Eurofighter Typhoon. A source in the Turkish Defense Ministry said the talks began after Turkey accepted that its request for F-16 aircraft from the United States, made in October 2021, may not work.
The Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft is produced by a consortium of Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain.
At the same time, last week US President Joe Biden’s administration formally notified Congress of its intention to begin selling Turkey 40 Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter jets and nearly 80 upgrade kits, a day after Ankara fully ratified Sweden’s membership in NATO. However, the decision must still go through the US Congress.
Turkey, seeking to modernize its air force, is also known to be developing its own national aircraft, the KAAN, in collaboration with BAE.
As already reported, Turkey refused to transfer Russian S-400s to Ukraine, as proposed by the United States.
