Members of the Bundestag are calling for the renaming of Unter den Linden Boulevard, where the Russian Embassy is located. Maybe even in honor of Vladimir Zelensky.

Several politicians from different parties have called for streets in front of embassies of authoritarian states to be named after political prisoners. Parliamentarians note: the number of political prisoners in the world has increased, authoritarian regimes are trying to suppress opponents – renaming them will make them more visible, reports Amal Berlin.
The idea to rename the boulevard in front of the Russian Embassy in honor of the Ukrainian president belongs to CDU representative Roderich Kiesewetter. As an argument, they cite the example of the neighboring Czech Republic, where part of the street on which the Russian Embassy is located in Prague was renamed the Street of Ukrainian Heroes.
On January 31, the district council of the Berlin district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg rejected a proposal to name one of the squares in honor of Kyiv. 21 politicians were against it, another 14 were in favor.
The deputies argued for almost 20 minutes. Representatives of the Christian Democrats, who initiated the appearance of Kievplatz in Berlin, emphasized the importance of symbolic support for Ukraine, which is now defending pan-European values.
The Left and Greens objected, noting the importance of direct rather than symbolic assistance. Among the arguments was the following: Kyiv is more beautiful and has a larger area than the proposed one – and, perhaps, in a different area of the capital.
Ultimately, after debate and further discussion by the Greens, who form a majority on the council, politicians agreed with the cultural committee’s decision to reject the naming proposal.
About 40 activists from various Ukrainian organizations came to the hearing. They brought a ten-meter banner of Ukraine, which was on the Maidan in 2014.
