US President Joe Biden said this on January 28:
We had a difficult day in the Middle East yesterday. We lost three brave men during an attack on one of our bases… And we will respond.
Biden blamed the casualties on Iran-backed militias that spent months targeting American targets in the Middle East after Israel and Hamas began the war.
US Central Command said at least 34 troops were injured by the drone attack and eight were evacuated from Jordan for further treatment. Their condition is stable.
The attack was the first time American troops have been killed in the region since the war in the Gaza Strip began. The names of the dead and wounded have not yet been disclosed.
Following the attack, US Senator Lindsey Graham called on President Joe Biden’s administration to strike Iran.
According to US Central Command, by the end of January there had been more than 158 attacks on US and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria since the start of the war in Israel. Officials have described the attacks as ineffective because they often did not result in serious injuries or damage to infrastructure.
