Kiev, Ukraine (AP) – EU executives on Friday recommended that Ukraine be given candidate status one day to join the 27 -nation bloc.
The promise of joining the Union for Peace on the Continent contains deep symbolism for a country at war. But this is only the first step in a process that could take decades.
And that hasn’t silenced the guns and artillery that continue to kill civilians and plunder cities, as well as the millions fleeing their homes since Russia launched its Invasion of Neighbors on February 24th.
Russia has attacked cities in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine, prompting desperate residents to struggle to understand what will happen to them in the coming years.
“We are old, we have nowhere to go. Where are you going? ”Asked Vira Miedienteva, one of the elderly residents who fought after Thursday’s attack in Lisichansk, across the river from Sivierododonsk, the main target of the last few weeks of fighting that the Russians have almost won.
The European Commission’s recommendation is the first step on the long road to membership and will come days after the four EU leaders pledged their support for Kiev’s candidacy. The recommendation will be discussed by the leaders of the 27-nation bloc at a summit in Brussels next week. The commencement of accession negotiations requires the unanimous consent of all Member States.
The war increases pressure on EU governments Accelerate the status of Ukraine’s candidate. But the process is expected to take even more years and EU members are left with double standards on how quickly and completely they should open their arms to new members.
– The Ukrainian navy said on Friday that it shot down a Russian ship carrying air defense systems on a strategic Black Sea island. In a statement posted on social media, the Navy said Vasily Beck was used to bring ammunition, weapons and personnel to Snake Island, which is important to protect sea routes from the main port of Odessa. He did not say what damage he sustained in the blow.
Snake Island, located about 35 kilometers (20 miles) from the coast, was unforgettable at the start of the war, when the Ukrainian border guards assigned there did not violate Russian orders to surrender, using colored tongues, which eventually replaced them with tears of protest. There was no reaction from the Russian authorities to Ukraine’s claims.
