A Florida resident who allegedly made anti-Asian statements to women was arrested Friday on charges of hate crimes, including assault and harassment, in New York.
Madeleine Barker, 47, of Merritt Island, Florida, was accused of using pepper spray on four women, except for observations. CNN reported.
The alleged attack on the city’s Meatpacking District is part of a growing hate crime against Asians in recent years.
A report from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism showed that anti-Asian hate crimes rose 339% in 2021 from the previous year. NBC News reported. According to the report, hate crimes in New York will rise by 343% in 2021.
Three of the four Asian victims, an Interview with WABC-TV, New York News, said the attack began after a woman “started fighting” with them on June 11, June 11.
The victims said the attacker asked them to “go back to where [they] He came, – he said: “You are not here” and told the Asian man who was going: “Return all your bones to your country”.
The victims added that they tried to move at the right distance and one of them said that because of the pepper spray he could not open his eyes for 30 minutes.
So far it is not yet known what he will do after leaving the post. The Legal Aid Society did not immediately respond to a question from HuffPost about whether it was a barter.
