The US removed nuclear warheads from Britain in 2008, believing the Cold War threat from Russia had subsided.
For the first time in 15 years, the US will deploy nuclear weapons on British soil because of the threat from Russia. The Telegraph writes about it on Friday, January 26.
The publication indicates that the warheads are located at the RAF Lakenheath base.
“The US removed nuclear missiles from the UK in 2008, believing that the Cold War threat and aggression from Moscow had subsided. Now they are back,” TT writes.
The return of American weapons to the UK is said to be part of a program to build and modernize nuclear facilities across the country in response to heightened tensions with the Kremlin after Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
“Documents show the Pentagon has ordered new equipment for the base, including ballistic shields designed to protect troops from attack. RAF Lakenheath plans to deploy B61 -12 gravity bombs, which can have a yield of up to 50 kilotons, more than three times the power of the atomic weapon that dropped on Hiroshima in 1945,” explained The Telegraf.
Russia has already said the deployment of US weapons to the UK would be seen by Moscow as an “escalation” and would be met with “compensating countermeasures”.
Let’s recall that in May 2023, about a third (29%) of Russian residents believed that the Kremlin was ready to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine “if necessary”; 60% have the opposite opinion.
It was previously reported that Russia, China and the United States are modernizing and expanding their nuclear test sites. The American publication Newsweek simulated a nuclear strike on Moscow and St. Petersburg to find out what the consequences will be for the residents of these cities.
