In the case of Finland’s application, it took Erdogan several days, Bloomberg reports.
Hungary has so far remained the only country that has not yet supported the entry of a Scandinavian country into the Alliance.
Sweden has applied to join NATO in the summer of 2022, along with Finland. The countries decided to join the alliance against the background of a full-scale invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine. To join NATO, it is necessary that the candidate country’s application be approved by all members of the Alliance.
In April 2023, only Finland joined NATO. Türkiye opposed Sweden’s entry into the union, putting forward a number of conditions. In particular, Ankara demands that Stockholm hand over people whom the Turkish authorities accuse of terrorism, as well as “prevent the activities” of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which Turkey considers a terrorist organization.
